Mike - Heart, Style, Faith, and Purpose
How many hats can one person wear? Mike Brewer is a multi-talented, multi-hyphenated human. Hip hop artist. Song writer. Performer. Airforce veteran. Advocate. Volunteer. Model. Fashionista. Podcast host. Media journalist. Storyteller. Student. Dog dad. Just to name a few. “I’m kind of doing the whole life thing, pursuing the dreams, and making it all happen.”
So, how does one go about pursuing so many passions and life goals? Mike gives his props to the utilization of Google Calendar and then he continues to share, “You have to know what's important. Organize your priorities. Have that hard conversation with yourself. What is my number one right now?” “[Stay] organized, fill your cup, have a good schedule, [prioritize], and [be consistent].”
Mike admits that he wasn’t always this organized and that it takes patience pursuing so many goals. “At one point it was just all, ‘I’m gonna make it in music. I’m gonna have a cul-de-saq with all my friends in it. We’re going to be super rich. We’re gonna travel the world and tour.’ I was risking it all for what felt like a decade. Along that journey I learned so many lessons. I lost some friends through the process, lost some family members through the process, lost romantic relationships through the process, but on the other side of that I now understand what it takes to be an entrepreneur, to be someone who’s active in your community, to learn what your purpose is, but also to be able to still value and manage the relationships that you have, based off of what you feel like is a higher calling.”
Born and raised in a small town in Indiana, Mike has felt so much gratitude to be accepted in Salt Lake City, and to have his music received so well. He has a new solo EP coming out called “In the Mean Time” with a mini documentary to support it. “It’s from my time in 2023, here in Salt Lake. I did 13 shows in 12 months, all right here in SLC. It’s kind of crazy. I kept getting booked every single month, within like two weeks of everything.” He’s called Salt Lake City home now, since 2018.
Mike started his music journey when he was 16. He’s been a musician for almost two decades, now – professionally for 9 years, and practicing for 19 years. “Anything that I believe can bring people together, and help elevate, and boost people, that involves being creative, I love being a part of.” Mike utilizes his creative platforms to be an “advocate for those voices who aren’t being heard.” He’s one of three co-hosts on the podcast “Young OG Perspective”, whose “whole purpose is to highlight those who are trailblazers within their space. It started in Salt Lake City and we’ve even traveled to different states.”
“My purpose has always been to travel the world and be a testimony for God; I lead my life Christlike. I wanna love everyone equally. I want to show everyone that there’s so much light in this life, and that the human experience is so one of a kind, and that we should try to get the most out of it every single day. Mike leads his life as “testament” for what Christ has done for him. Coming from a “very very small town” and a “very very small family” the loss of his mother at age 8 was a very traumatic hardship. “That kind of propelled me into adulthood a little bit earlier than most people, dealing with grief and certain emotions, and kind of having a different perspective on life.”
Experiencing the loss of family members, as well as addiction in his household taught Mike a lot of lessons by learning from other people’s paths. “For me to be where I’m at today, despite everything that was around me, and the environments that I was in. I'm very grateful and I have to give that credit to my faith in God, because there’s so many times where I was like, ‘This makes no sense.’, and I kinda turned to prayer and their power to guide me.”
Mike believes that, “We’re all the same. We all bleed the same. We breathe the same air. We’re all different. We’re all unique in our own right. At the same time, we’re all living the same human experience. Everyone has emotions, everyone experiences hardship, everyone experiences (hopefully) blessings and achievements, and all those different things.” He offers the encouragement that, “When we do differ, learn how to talk about it. Learn how to be able to come to the table and be able to disagree respectfully, and open each other's eyes to different opinions, and different walks of life.”
“Go everywhere, do everything. Do it with heart. Do it with style. Do it with faith. And do it with purpose. – And you’ll be alright.”
“I just encourage people to continue to keep going, despite the hurdles that life may throw at them, despite feeling like there may be no options some days, and knowin’ that there’s always a place for them in this world.”
