A Good Haircut and a Better Conversation

Mike Jones spends his days cutting hair, but what he really enjoys is getting to know people.

Between raising a four-year-old and a newborn at home and working long afternoons behind the chair, life stays busy. Yet one of his favorite parts of the job isn't the haircut itself. It's the conversations.

Every client who sits in his chair brings a different story, a different perspective, and a chance to connect. Over time, those conversations become one of the most meaningful parts of the work.

When I asked what people take for granted, his answer surprised me.

A good haircut.

It sounds simple until you've had a bad one.

For Mike, a haircut is about more than appearance. It's about confidence. It's about helping someone feel like themselves again. Sometimes that transformation is dramatic. Someone walks in looking tired, worn down, or disconnected from themselves and leaves standing a little taller.

That's one of his favorite parts.

Watching someone leave feeling better than when they arrived.

His work has also taught him something about people. You never know what someone is carrying with them when they walk through the door. The person in your chair might be having one of the hardest weeks of their life. They might be struggling with something invisible. A little kindness, a conversation, or a boost of confidence can have a bigger impact than we realize.

When I asked what he loves about Salt Lake City, he laughed a little and admitted he wasn't sure. The city is clean, he said. Nice. Comfortable. Sometimes the things we appreciate most become so familiar that they're hard to put into words.

Talking with Mike reminded me that some of the most meaningful moments in life aren't always the big ones. Sometimes they're the small interactions that help someone feel seen, confident, and cared for.

And sometimes that's enough to change the course of someone's day.
